---------------------------------------------------

Hailing from Kyrgyzstan, Darkestrah are no doubt the most successful metal band to come out of that place. On this particular release, they play a very epic style of black metal, hooking you from the very start, keeping you tuned throughout the whole album. The twist here is that the album is one song, 33 minutes and 33 seconds. Of the many ridiculously long songs in my library, none hold my attention quite as much as “Epos”. Starting out slow and easy, with gentle, entrancing waves crashing against an ocean beach, this song steadily, yet masterfully, builds up like a grade A horror flick building up the suspense before coming in for the kill. I don’t call much black metal “beautiful”, but Epos is beautiful in every meaning of the word. Not only beautiful in that it’s incredible BM, but beautiful in that once you listen to the entire song, you’re left staring into space, thinking about it. That’s right, it will make you reflect afterward; it has that kind of staying power.

It’s obvious that a lot of thought was put into the songwriting for this song; it’s full of comely melodies and gripping interludes, even taking a break for some jaw harp action. The way Epos was put together is breathtaking in itself, so give this album a long, detailed listen; every bit of praise is well-deserved.
