Using two amplifiers adjusted in gain to the point of almost resonance, Alvin Lucier realized his breakthrough composition, conceived in 1964 and performed in 1982. Alpha brains from his brain are being transformed into sound, producing vibrations in the 9Hz to 15Hz frequency range, almost unreachable for the human ear, but the nonlinearities in the amplifiers and the stimulus of such low frequency sound waves on percussion instruments lie in the hearable spectrum of sound, and thus can be recorded. This piece of genius from this contemporary American composer can be heard in this two tracks record, ripped from the original vinyl performed by him and by Pauline Oliveros.
According to Lucier, this kind of performance requires quite a deal of concentration to produce a steady stream of alpha waves from the brain, instead of just isolated bursts, and this can be noticed in his performance as it evolves.
Don't miss this unique experience.
