I’ve been listening to this album for a few years now and I’ve always thought the same thing about it: can death metal get any purer than this? I discovered these guys at the same time I dug up Fleshgod Apocalypse, Dark Lunacy, Mortician, and Hate Eternal. It was on this stupid website that isn’t around anymore, but I’m glad I found those bands. When I want to show someone what pure death metal sounds like, one of the bands that I’ll end up playing for them is Vomitory. And for a plain death metal album, it’s not that bad at all. And that’s kind of unusual for me to say because the thing about a band that always grabs me is if their creative and progressive with their music, instead of sticking to pure tradition.
The first thing I would like to note about this album is that the guitar distortions are very clean and smooth, as opposed to the crunchy distortions on Carnage Euphoria. Most of the album checks out pretty well. None of the instruments are overpowering and drowning everything else out, the bands is relatively tight but it could use some work. I like the deep growls, except they sound a tad bit too relaxed, so they could use to be more powerful. I love the way they have the drums tuned on this album. The drums have a really clicky sound, but there’s bass in the drums so it’s not all high-pitched and annoying like it is on some metal records. The guitar solos are a little too simple for my taste, but luckily they fix that up in Carnage Euphoria. And the drums are kind of overtechnicallizing the other instruments (I just invented my own word). In other words, the drums are really technical, but everything else is pretty simple, and it doesn’t really fit. But other than those minor faults, Blood Rapture checks out just fine.
This is one of the albums where I haven’t paid any attention to the song names. I just put this album on shuffle and listen to it straight through. But I did pick out a couple of song names so that I could point something out that bothers me. You can’t hear the bass in some of the songs; it’s just not loud enough. Two of those songs would be Rotting Hill and Hollow Retribution. And I don’t know how many of you out there pay much attention to what the bassist is playing, but I naturally hear what the bassist is playing because I play the bass myself. This happens to all musicians, when they listen to a recording that’s not theirs, the instrument that the musician play just naturally stands out to them. It’s actually kind of weird because before I started playing bass almost 4 years ago, I didn’t really hear what the bassist was playing unless he was doing a solo or something (like in Good Times Bad Times by Led Zeppelin). So this album is pure death metal, nothing else. This gets a 16/20.
The Black Crown is Suicide Silence’s third studio album which was released by Century Media Records. Suicide Silence is arguable the biggest, badest deathcore band in the world today taking the “core” scene by storm when they released their debut album The Cleansing. After The Cleansing was released in 2007, Suicide Silence turned into what can only be described as a deathcore Juggernaut. Their next album, No Time to Bleed might have had a little less success because of some of the new elements they have introduced into their music (the atmosphere is a big one) which didn’t really suit their style. But It was still a very respectable album. Now, all the fans were waiting for this to come out and the long wait ended with… a little disappointment.
From their last album No Time to Bleed, Suicide Silence have progressed a little bit from their last album. With the atmosphere and their style of music. The thing is that they must have forgotten what made themselves so famous and that was The Cleansing. Except The Cleansing had little to no atmosphere to their music at all, so I have no clue why they introduced it. Not only that, but why did they kept utilizing it in this album. It’s just not them, Suicide Silence isn’t suppose to be the darkest band out there. And I think that the introduction of this darkish atmosphere doesn’t work well with their music anyway. It worked for Whitechapel and Chelsea Grin, but not Suicide Silence. In fact, it makes their music sound even more juvenile than what it was suppose to.
Prior to the release of this album, Mitch Lurker (the lead singer) vowed and promised that this album was going to be more serious mature then their previous releases. I think not, unless you consider adding some nu metal influences into your music, more mature. And I don’t think having big names featuring in The Black Crown make it more mature and serious either. I mean they have Frank Mullen (Suffocation) and Jonathan Davis (KoRn) which some people might welcome. But just because you have these guys in their music, doesn’t it’s going to be any better. I don’t care if they have the queen of England in there, it won’t make it any better. I think the whole thing about The Black Crown being “mature” was propaganda from the very beginning.
The next thing that has suffered in this album is their song structure, now some people might think that deathcore has no structure. But it does, not matter what others say, it does (even though it’s very messy and obscure). But the song structure and layout in The Black Crown is absolutely atrocious. They have tried to combine the deathcore style of song writing and structure with nu metal elements. This has ultimately failed and lead to the collapse of the whole framework with made up their songs. I’m not even sure if these guys put thought into their music, because it is that obscure and messy. The transitions aren’t smooth and their music no longer makes sense, what a shame.
Even musically I don’t think that they are anything special anymore, they are still extremely repetitive. Hell, they still have the same style of drumming that we saw in The Cleansing, which was far repetitive back then. So if they drumming wasn’t anything special back then what makes people think that it will be anything special now? Also the guitar solos aren’t anything special either. I don’t want to sound mean or anything, but if people can’t do a decent guitar solo, why do them at all. There is no point and I preferred their old ways when they tried to keep the terrible guitar solos to a minimum. And the vocals, the vocals… hmmm, I cannot put my finger on it, but there is something about the vocals that doesn’t seem as seducing as what we saw from The Cleansing. I think that back in The Cleansing the words were dragged on longer and this suited the style of Mitch’s vocals better. I don’t even think he is able to go as high or as low as before. Also, his voice was smoother back in the old days.
The last think, I’d like to say about this album, is that they have thrown all creativity out the window for this album. There are absolutely nothing about this album that makes me want to stand back and just say “wow, these guys have done an excellent job”. It just seems like they have taken steps backwards and I would have to say that they aren’t as good as many deathcore bands in the underground scene out there. There is absolutely nothing original about this album, nothing, nothing at all! The music is highly repetitive and I was bored with the music before I even got though half the album. Even their breakdowns have taken a beating. Do you remember the breakdowns in “Destruction of a Statue” and “Bludgeoned to Death”? Do you remember how heavy and how seductive they were? Yeah, they are gone now, so don’t even bother with this album if you are expecting to hear those types of breakdowns again.
Overall, this album was a disappointment. There were absolutely no indications of progression in their music since No Time to Bleed. Everything we loved from The Cleansing is now gone and everything we didn’t like from No Time to Bleed has been emphasised further. Now look what we are left with, rubbish. I think I only got through less than half of the album until I have had enough of repetiveness of this album. And, the rest of the album was no different. I mean yeah sure, the clean vocals in “Witness The Addiction” but what the fuck are clean vocals doing in Suicide Silence? I really think that this album was a rushed job from the very beginning and I don’t think that these guys will accumulate any newer fans with The Black Crown.
I’m not even going to recommend this album to anyone because why should people settle for this when replaying The Cleansing will give you more pleasure. But Ultimately, it is your decision to do so. So, I recommend to all the diehard Suicide Silence fans out there because you might like it (even though there is only a small chance). To get a good idea of what this album is all about, check out the track “Fuck Everything”. But be warned, if anyone is expecting anything like their older stuff, prepare to be disappointed because you are not going to get it. I give Suicide Silence’s 2011 album The Black Crown a 5/20.

Stratovarius

tracklist:

Stratovarius’ second album since the departure of last “founder” Timo Tolkki, Elysium represents a creative spirit that shows they can function just fine without Madman Tolkki. Elysium is a comeback of sorts, not because the band has shifted away dramatically since the departure of Tolkki, but because it features track after track of music that isn’t mediocre. Now, I’m sure that Stratovarius fans will be in up in arms over this statement, but Stratovarius has been known to release very mediocre albums mainly due to a lack of originality, or just creative songwriting within their framed style. Elysium represents a return to what made Stratovarius an innovator within the power metal genre, with grandiose solos and melodies, a soaring, epic vocal performance by Timo Kotipelto, and a particularly powerful opus known as “Elysium.”
In particular, the opening two songs “Darkest Hours” and “Under Flaming Skies” are really stand out songs, the first with some really great melodies, and the second with some inclusion of groove which is completely unexpected and a welcome follow up to “Darkest Hours.” “Infernal Maze” is a song that is a combination of Kamelot’s sultry vocal style as a lead in, which delivers us to a pleasant, Stratovarious style speedy neo-classical number that doesn’t drag, or sound like a stagnant carbon copy of any number of the band’s other tunes.
“Elysium” is the centerpiece of the album, and the ultimate aural description of the epic song, as well as the power metal motif. A strong sense of atmosphere, instrumentation, and high melody with over arching crescendos and diminuendos create a real treat for those metal fans that look for songs that have no problem filling 18 minutes. I wouldn’t say that “Elysium” marks a new level for the epic metal song, as tunes like Iced Earth’s “Dante’s Inferno” stand firmly atop the mountain. The only thing that holds “Elysium” back is it’s lack of aggression. Now, a lack of aggression in any Stratovarius album is not uncommon, but when you create an 18 minute metal song, you need to have balance, and when the entirety of your song tends to be on the more lighter side, it will never reach the levels of greatness that are often expected of songs with such length.
In the end, those who are not fans of power metal, Stratovarius in particular, will not find much value in Elysium. Those who will be most intrigued by this album will be those fans of the band who have become a bit disillusioned over the years because of lackluster albums. I think many old fans will become pleasantly surprised by Elysium, and it’s representation of a new found vigor for it’s creator. Highly recommended to any fan of the genre.

''The music is more than promising, with lightning fast riffing, furious blast beats and abrasive vocals.''
Opening up with blasting sirens and gunfire on “Warschau II: Headhunter Halfmoon”, Mortuus comes in with his trademark screams that make him sound absolutely inhuman followed by complex drumming and unrelenting guitar riffs. Even with the changes of speed that slows down to a more trudging rhythm in between the ferocity of Mortuus’s vocals alongside the shredding guitar and drums; “Wacht am Rhein: Drumbeats of Death” still becomes repetitious and is carried on for too long. “Prochorovka: : Blood and Sunflowers” closes out the EP with some warped music from the 40’s that gives way to a churning rhythm with Mortuus’s blood-soaked vocals.
If you’re new to Marduk, there are several other albums by them that you need to pick before this EP. But if you are a long time fan that needs their fix until their next release comes out, then “Iron Dawn” is definitely worth checking out!

The Bright Path Of The Lost Years
Their EP of 1996 was a really good endeavor, but this one is a one step higher and able to make you hear it anytime and for many times. I have four words which describe perfectly this album: lyrism, prog majesty and melody. From the first melodic tone of “Deeds of All Disgrace” till the powerful continuity you realize the magic. The instrumental “Holy communion” is another proof that songs like these will never be tired for the ears. The guitars from Fotis Sotiropoulos sing on their own.
The themes of the lyrics in prog/power bands are used to describing psychological situations, scenes from the human reality or something common to the title of the album, but who says that an epic theme is not permitted in an album like this one? Listen to “Gods of war” or “Alexander” and feel their epic rhythm through the progressive tones, some of the most beautiful alternations between the guitar of Fotis and the smart keyboards of Giorgos Georgiou. Pay attention to the magnificent intro solo of “Alexander” and you will want to sing with them in the end ‘Ride on ride on Alexander’!
From the early days of the ‘90s the clue of melody has been an integral part of the prog/power Greek metal bands and in The Mortal Flesh of Love this is so obvious that you will not have any lack. Close your eyes, isolate yourself from anything that may annoy you for the listening and then you are ready to hear “Night caress”. Feel the tenderness on guitar and most of all this gentle voice of Michalis Smeros, one of the best singers in Greece, listen carefully how able he is on uncoiling his vocals from the calms to the highest. If you find better than this, it must be fake.
“Blind faith” is the song which expresses ideally the situation of humanity, many people have different beliefs and no one of them wants to find the real one to the one God. Its chorus is anthemical and easy to remember by the first time.
Fortress Under Siege are without doubt one of the biggest and best bands in their style, some other bands in Greece which were created the same period with them stuck somewhere back to the past, but this band is here and still alive and their first album The Mortal Flesh of Love is a guarantee that you will not be disappointed at all, on the other hand you will appreciate it by your smile on your lips and your thoughts!
Australian unhinged metallers KUNVUK have announced the addition of Virgile Coste to the group’s ranks.
As the band states on their website:
“We have found the most incredible drummer in this insanely dynamic Frenchman. The songs from our debut album are sounding absolutely crushing with him and the new songs are shaping up to be incredible shape-shifting, teeth-crushing experiments in ferocious annoyance. Our band now wholly contains three members from three different continents: Europe, South America and Australia. Damn! We couldn’t be more pumped!”
“Hypochondriac”, the first music video from KUNVUK can be viewed at the following location:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huBrgZHbmzs
“Immute: Jackals” was recorded, engineered, mixed and produced by the band's lead guitarist/vocalist David Hart and mastered by Rick O'Neil (Faith No More, Grinspoon, Bob Dylan) at Turtlerock Mastering.
The album was released as a two-disc, DVD-sized, eight-panel digipack with 24-page booklet. The first disc contained 12 new compositions rallying from the brink of Insanity to the pinnacle of clarity. Coupled with this was a second disc which contained the reconstructed, re-recorded, remixed and remastered version of the band's demo EP, "The Gone Mekanik Anticipation Demonstration".
Painstakingly recorded over a two year period and representing the culmination of years of no Sleep and damaged nerves, "Immute:Jackals" has been completely independently funded and produced.

Lord Ahriman admits that it surely was not an easy task to find a worthy replacement for Emperor Magus Caligula, who has been doing an amazing job for Dark Funeral during the
past 15 years. The Lord says that he has not only been "the vocalist" for the band, but the also a very good friend of his and he always will be!
Anyway 10 months of Intense search worldwide have finally given result and he is VERY proud to announce and welcome "NACHTGARM" to the horde.
Lord Ahriman: “I think, I can speak for everyone in the band and say that besides completely knocking us Down with the strength of his vocals and wide register, what truly blew us away was his presence, energy and the amazing spirit he showed during the final audition. He just came into the rehearsal room, found and took his rightful spot. And thenjust set the whole place on hellfire! It's really hard to explain "that" certain feeling one is looking for, but once you get it, you just know that you've found the right man for the
job. And that is something we all got “deluxe”. No doubtabout that! Mankind has no idea what is coming upon them. And I can't wait to bring this Maniac on tour for the world to experience Dark Funeral in the most Intense and Hellish way ever!
During the 10 month we have been looking for a new vocalist and drummer, we have received over 1000 applications. The interest to join Dark Funeral has been way over expectation
and quite overwhelming to say the least. And we would like to take this opportunity to thank EVERYONE who applied for the jobs. One thing is for sure:
There are a lot of unknown talents out there. And once they've found the right band to deliver their goods, I'm sure we all will hear from many of these guys in the future. Good luck!”
Chaq Mol: When Emperor Magus Caligula quit the band my first thought was "how the fuck will we be able to find a worthy replacement now?". In My Eyes
he was the best vocalist in The Black Metal scene. Anyhow, after we had listened through a couple of hundreds applicants, there were two guys that really stood out and sounded very promising indeed. The question now was, would they nail it on a live audition too, and would their personalities be of that kind we were looking for?! Well, after 10 month search we finally found the right man for the
job! And all my previous doubts and concerns are now a memory forgotten. NACHTGARM, welcome to
the horde!
Nachtgarm: To me, Dark Funeral is the Epitome of Black Metal. To be a member of this institution now, is not only a big honor for me, but is also complementing my work as a lead singer as well as my action at the front of the stage throughout the years. Consequently, I am very glad that Dark Funeral put their unholy faith in me and my abilities. As the successor of Emperor Magus Caligula I am quite aware of the high expectations being directed to my person. However, I can assure every one of you out there, that with every breath I take I will live up to these expectations. Hands down. This is the arrival of Satan’s Empire. Now let us set this world aflame!
But that's not all, DARK FUNERAL are also proud to announce to board 70000TONS OF METAL, The World's Biggest Floating Heavy Metal Festival that will sail Monday, January 23, 2012 aboard the Royal Caribbean “Majesty of the Seas” from Miami, FL to George Town, Cayman Islands and will not return you to the real world for four days until Friday, January 27, 2012.
Make no mistake, 70000TONS OF METAL is not your grandma's cruise. It's also not one of the cruises that share the ship with regular cruise guests. This is an all Heavy Metal cruise! Can you imagine that? A whole luxury cruise ship full of metalheads? You can enjoy tons of onboard live shows on several in and outdoor stages from early in the morning until late at night, open-mic nights, Heavy Metal karaoke with members of the bands, bars that never close, again:
bars that never close..., a fun-and-sun-filled day on the beautiful island of Grand Cayman and since there is no backstage area you will have the opportunity to mingle side-by-side with the artists in this incredibly fan-friendly scenario that has no comparison. It's like everyone has a backstage pass!
