Sui Caedere at Myspace
---------------------------------------------
I can't believe I didn't post this until now, seeing as it might just be my favorite release of 2009, up there with Skagos. Sitting heavily in the depressive side of things, Sui Caedere play an especially saddening and miserable type of black metal. Hell, the band name translates to "suicide" in Latin. This is a very well-composed album in that it's mainly depressive BM, but also throws in doom influences as some parts are painfully slow. There is the slight ambient touch as well to help break up the long songs.
The highlights of this album are the vocals and the riffing. First, let's deal with the riffs. This guy really knows how to pull you deep under the depths of nothingness with gutwrenching melancholic melodies, and once you're at the brink of despair and desolation, a shining riff comes slicing through the dark sky, bringing light to an otherwise bleak situation. Very crafty. The vocals also meld excellently with this guitarwork and general mood. Slightly on the harsh side, there is an eerie quality to the vocals that make them irresistible to listen do. Not your typical agonized shrieks, but more sinister, like the vocalist isn't the despaired one, but he's actually contributing to YOUR despair as a listener. The way he draws out the ends of stanzas, in harmony with the drawn out riffs makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. A truly wonderful blend and absolutely recommended of the highest degree.
