A pioneering work in the development of electronic music, Kontakte was originally designed to be a work completely performed by a computer, but later on the German composer decided to complete it with a second version that incorporated live musicians (playing piano and percussion) on top of the already recorded electronic music. Eventually the work developed into a mix of acoustic music, electronic music and manipulated percussion music that aims to achieve a contact between the purely artificial and the organic acoustic sounds.
