This is a very impressive slab of Depressive Black Metal. I'm particularly struck by how calm this album is and how fluently it flows. There are no silly or awkward parts, and it all seems to blend together masterfully. A one man BM band, and this guy has shown what he is capable of. The vocals are especially remarkable in how well they blend with the rest of the carefully tuned guitars and bass. Everything is perfect here, and this record does not disappoint.

Therefore this release hasn’t gained much attention yet, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the album isn’t good. Jordan Varela and Nile tour bassist, Joe Payne, created the band recently, and this magnificent album was released during the spring 2005.

Raw Black Metal is always fun, especially of the Finnish variety. These guys have defined themselves as a reckless, noisy, and chaotic band, and it fits them perfectly. This is their style and it's quite obvious that they have a lot of fun with it.

A very abrasive release, these guys might be a little new to the music scene, but somehow manage to create beauty out of dark, wild melodies, entrenched within filthy, distorted guitars and scratching vocals. This is proof that song structure has a profound impact on an album, for without this "free" sound in the music, we'd have simply noise.

I love this record so much because of how liberated and unrestricted it sounds. If they screw up, they don't care! If they try oh so hard to play elegant instruments like acoustic guitars and pianos and only sound uncouth while doing so, I'm not bothered. It gives this album more originality and sets it apart from the boring conformist other black metal acts out there. Recommended!

MORE DEMOS! This is an awesome demo. I'm very impressed with what usually is shitty quality and barely listenable. In fact, I think this demo is the highlight of Musta Surma's discography. It just feels so... genuine. The style here is straight up old school black metal, even though the release date is 1998 (was recorded in '97, released in '98). There are no weird modern experimental features at all, just good production, croaked vocals, tight riffs, and orthodox BM here. They say they find their influences in early Burzum and Darkthrone, so give this one a shot!

Continuing the Finnish Black Metal trend, I present you with more obscurity: Jumalhämärä. These guys play a neat, sort of avant-garde style of BM with interesting tempo changes and compact riffs, not to mention a more prominent bass line. It has a very clean sound, adding to the atmosphere, and the tremolo picking is done in sort of an up and down manner, giving you the feeling you're on a roller coaster or something. An attention-grabbing listen and a fun time - go for it!

PS: This isn't exactly easy to find, so grab it just for your collections, if anything. ;b

Generally not a fan of this folk/viking nonsense, but I can't deny talent when it truly is there. Basically, Mistur is the next Windir, and we all know how much you love Windir. These guys take a very strong influence from Windir's folky melodies, combined with the occasional spurt of gritty black metal. A short, albeit impressive, four song demo that is only a taste of what we hope to come. The Mistur phenomenon passed a while ago, but for those who missed it, here is the Skoddefjellet demo in all its glory!

Dessa vez o rapaz preferiu fazer algo mais leve e comercial, conseguiu a façanha de assinar com a Sony Music e estréia neste "Até que a Morte não Separe" em grande estilo. O som gira em torno do Gothic Rock europeu altamente influenciado por bandas como HIM e Paradise Lost, onde mescla peso com traços mais pop tendo o diferencial de cantar em português, o que deu um ar inovador ao estilo. As letras variam do sentimentalismo cafona, como em Cinderela, ao pessimismo, como em Ninguém ama Ninguém (que conta com a participaçao de AAron, vocalista do My Dying Bride). Heh, been on a Psychedelic BM binge lately, in case you haven't noticed, and this is another phenomenal release from an unknown band. A very psychedelic album, I find myself hypnotized, entranced by the experimentation and the style of musicianship.

The album opens with a quick, unrelenting militaristic beat that sets the stage for what's to come. Tranquil interludes spackle this release, combining the sounds of guitar string scratching and white noise to give this album a particularly atmospheric sound. It really throws you out there, calming, yet violently disturbing at the same time. Great contrast.

Another contrasting aspect about this album is the vocals. Muffled clean vocals that seem to be disappearing into the background are fused with harsh vocals to give "In the Distance" a sort of "groovy" feel, for lack of a better word.

Fuzzy production and slow, chugging parts really bring out the psychedelia, making this an extraordinary release. I know the progressive tags sorta contradicts Black Metal, but I feel like this album is actually going somewhere, like it has a purpose. Remarkable.
