There's not much to say about this band, aside from "Holy shit". Part the Second represents a deep delving into the inner machinations of front man Toby Driver. Heart and soul are poured out into this album, and it's mightily impressive to watch the musical growth that is taking place here. Great contrast is present on this album and... aw hell, JUST DOWNLOAD IT ALREADY!

Highly recomended! A very tight mix of noise ambient(more prevalent in their first album, Ocassus), industrial, high speed tempo black/death metal with a high dose of ambient parts. Experimental extreme music for dissidents :P

Some of you may already be familiar with this unique black metal band, but probably with their later material, which is absolutely nothing like their debut. This album is one of my favorite black metal albums, not necessarily the best, but definitely a fun favorite. I just absolutely love the style of BM these guys play on their First Spell. It's sort of passive-sounding, with very dark and gloomy overtones, unlike traditional black metal. A lot of it is midpaced with brilliant keyboard work. The keys give this album an atmospheric and uplifting sound, while the rest of the music is grim and mysterious. Contrast is always intriguing to fiddle around with, and when done right, can turn any album into a masterpiece.
The vocals are the second key to this record, the first being the keys. I wouldn't call the vocals gutturals, but rather "raspy whispers". There's a certain "edge", a pained, agonizing, tortured atmosphere that accompanies this album because of the vocals. You know how winter and coldness is often associated with black metal? Well Gehenna is one of the stronger bands supporting that observation. The general rhythm and feel of the album is one of a looming battlefield, in the midst of winter, the cold wind howling all around you, dark snow stretching as far as the eye can see. Incredibly vivid. I just love this album with some sort of an irrational passion.
It's really too bad it's so short (under 30 minutes), I'm left wanting more, more, MORE!

A more well-known band, Nyktalgia has taken the Black Metal world by storm with their two releases over the past few years. Featured here is their debut self-titled, a scintillating array of depressive genius. This is very similar to Walknut, er Walknut is similar to Nyktalgia (they were here first!), with similar guitar tones and vocals at times.
A very hypnotizing album with furious drumming, constantly pummeling the listener into a lifeless, entrancing submission. Some of the best riffs around are displayed here, long and drawn out, surely satiating any appetite you have for completion. Some bands don't riff long enough, or stray away toward something else before you're done listening to a particular part, but not Nyktalgia. They see their songs through to the very end, making sure there are no dead ends or leftover "holes" in the music. A very successful album, to say the least. Highly recommended if you're a fan of Wolves in the Throne Room, Walknut, Negură Bunget, etc.

Formerly known as Amonal, Spanish five-piece rock act Soziedad Alkoholika got involved in the Basque scene by the end of the 1980s, making its debut with the release of a demo called Intoxicación Etílica in 1990, followed by a self-titled album and an EP called Feliz Falsedad, released in 1992. A year later, the band started a small venues tour, successfully playing in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, and France. In 1995 the group founded its own record label Mil a Gritos, issuing Ratas that same year. The reunion of the original Slayer lineup appears for the first time in the studio since 1990's Seasons in the Abyss (a record that topped off one of the great four-album stands in metal history: Hell Awaits, Reign in Blood, and South of Heaven preceded it). Drummer Dave Lombardo's retaking of the drum chair places the band back on the edge, pushing themselves and the genre to look back at where they've been and where they go from here. For a band that has been together as long as Slayer has, they have never made concessions and have stubbornly refused to sound like anyone but themselves. Christ Illusion is a raging, forward-thinking heavy metal melding with hardcore thrash; this is what made them such a breath of fresh air in the first place. And while they no longer sound terrifying, that was never their point anyway. Slayer rips through these ten songs, complete with lightning changes, off-kilter rhythms, and riff invention, together with plodding crescendos, sick-as-hell guitar breaks, and dark, unrelentingly twisted-as-f*ck lyrics that reflect a singular intensity. The big themes on Christ Illusion center on the perverse myth of religion and its responsibility for, and cause of, war. One can talk about the power big-money has at stake in the Middle Eastern havoc, but the root, according to some of these songs, is the culture war between two competing myths, Christianity and Islam, that this time out could result in the apocalypse.
