Man, Thou just doesn't fuck up... ever. The boys from Baton Rouge return with another EP of the heaviest sludge-ridden doom this side of Burning Witch. I can't think of anything funny or clever to say about this aside from an immature inclination to post that Macho Man Randy Savage commercial, so I'll just let the music do the talking, for once. Track three fucking rules.

Portland's Atriarch was recently brought to my attention (like, yesterday) via the chatbox, and to be honest, it's downright shameful to have never even heard of such an awesome band located right in my own back yard. I did a bit of research and came up with this:
"Vocalist Lenny Smith describes Atriarch as “a living entity comprised of four parts, offering catharsis through sonic ritual where there is no god, there is no devil; there is an all encompassing force that connects all living things.”
Comprised of members from Graves At Sea, Trees, Final Conflict, and Get Hustle, Seventh Rule will release "Forever the End," the first full length by Atriarch, in the coming summer months. "Forever the End" was tracked in Portland with the help of William Holloway then mixed and mastered by Greg Wilkinson (Ludicra, Asunder, Saviors) at Earhammer Studios in Oakland, CA."
So that's pretty awesome. If you can't tell by the videos/mp3 (or the fucking antlers on the mic stand), Atriarch slather on some crusty blackened psyche/doom in the vein of Yob, Asunder, and Graves at Sea, but tinged with that certain ritualistic "cascadian" atmosphere that Pacific NW bands are famous for. Also, their vocalist is awesome and kind of reminds me of Ozzy when he's not peeling the paint off walls with his wretched shriek.
Keep an eye out for when the LP drops, and come say hi the next time Atriarch plays in Portland, because I'll definitely be there.

The Flight of Sleipnir was formed in the winter of 2007 by David Csicsely (Acheronian Dirge, Nexhymn, ex-Throcult) and Clayton Cushman (Acheronian Dirge, ex-Throcult). The project stemmed from a desire to explore ethereal and progressive sounds with lyrics that explore the rich literature of ancient Scandinavia. Keeping elements of their other projects and building a foundation upon doom and vintage metal

Born out of an obsession with and a tribute to doom and occult psych rock, Italy’s Doomraiser builds their altar to the heavy bands of yesteryear and today, fusing doom metal, psychedelic rock and acid roll. They combine the doom of Black Sabbath, Pentagram and Goatsnake with a psychedelic touch and a ‘70s progressive rock charm into a very tasty concoction.
On one hand, the new album acknowledges previous recordings… On the other hand, there have been some significant changes which have given birth to yet another new sound. Mountains of Madness is an unholy invocation of gritty, sprawling psycho doom. Five tracks that will bring you to the total freaked-out madness.

“Surrender To All Life Beyond Form” which sees Dark Castle create a much heavier, darker, more diverse, experimental, and ultimately their most immense and extreme sounding work to dateA torturous soul tearing sonic continuum that inverts and disembowels one's interpretation of so-called self-reflection, “Surrender To All Life Beyond Form” also features guest appearances from Mike Scheidt of YOB, Blake Judd of Nachtmystium, Nate Hall of U.S. Christmas, and Sanford Parker (Minsk, Nachtmystium, Twilight, The High Confessions etc.) himself.

We're happy to take a cheap shot at pretty much anyone over here, but if there is one band we do NOT fuck with, it's Corrupted. Not because we are afraid of a band full of Japanese dudes growling in español or anything, but simply because they are completely unfuckwithable and it's pointless to try to get a laugh out of band that rules so hard.
Se Hace Por Los Suenos Asesinos is the band's third full-length of earth-crumblingly heavy doom/sludge, and it's a total motherfucker. Well, at least the last two songs are, the first one is a motherfucker in a completely different way: a 17-minute acoustic track that should have you reaching for a straight razor somewhere around the halfway point (that's a compliment, by the way). If you somehow managed not to end your pathetic life by the end of Gekkou No Daichi, Rato Triste kicks in to erode the entire foundation of your being, while the final track Sus Futuros sounds positively upbeat while simultaneously bludgeoning whatever lifeforce you have left out of your body. Which probably isn't much.
Endlessly bleak, hopelessly hopeless, ultimately untouchable.

Embers was formed in 2004 by Kelly Nelson on bass and vocals, Steven DeCaprio on guitar, and Jerry Buchanan on drums. Embers has been noted as one of a number of prominent San Francisco Bay Area metal acts to feature women. The fact that three members of the band are female is notable due to the historic lack of female representation in heavy metal. Embers has been referred to as a Red and Anarchist Black Metal group. This is partially because Kelly Nelson and Steven DeCaprio’s previous band Lesser of Two was an anarchist punk rock band noted for their independent D.I.Y. ethic. This is also partially due to the radical lifestyle of the band members.

Bedemon was an offshoot of Pentagram in the early 70s (circa 1973). The name was chosen as a portmanteau of two earlier suggested names, Demon and Behemoth. Prior to joining Pentagram, Randy Palmer and his friend Mike Matthews along with Bobby Liebling and Geof O'Keefe (then current members of Pentagram) got together to record some of Palmer's compositions. The first session resulted in three songs: "Child of Darkness," "Serpent Venom" and "Frozen Fear." After a short time the group got together again and recorded some more tracks. When Palmer officially joined Pentagram he brought two tracks with him, "Starlady," and "Touch the Sky." After Palmer's departure from Pentagram the Bedemon got together in 1979 to record three more songs: "Time Bomb," "Nighttime Killer" and an unnamed composition by O'Keefe. A slightly different line-up (featuring former Pentagram member Greg Mayne on bass) recorded "Night of the Demon" along with some older songs in 1986.
Many songs from the Bedemon sessions were released on various bootlegs throughout the years, but were never officially released until 2005, when Black Widow Records released Child of Darkness.

Possessed By The Rise Of Magik, the eagerly anticipated, brand new full length from the widely acclaimed metal alchemists, Ramesses. Not just a title, Possessed By The Rise Of Magik is more a statement in response to the cathartic affects of this album, once you submit yourselves, it is impossible to resist its deadly charms. It sees the band capturing the ritualistic side of their nature to great effect without resorting to costumes, props and make-up. They incorporate the ideas, images, symbols and sigils of influential occult British artist Austin Osman Spare into their own spaced out grim craft to create a new magikal language.

The Throne was established in March 2008 as a completely D.I.Y. project, born from the ominous bowels of Hochelaga (MT-HELL), Those intoxicated maniacs deliver Groovy Sabbathy riffage, and low slung stoner doom swing… Dopethrone's drug fueled slo-mo sludge will please fans of bands like Eyehategod, Weedeater or Bongzilla.

Why teach an old horse new tricks....
Its been a hell of a few months for Canadian Doom and Sludge and here is another CD to add to the ever growing list of killer Canadian releases. "Dopethrone" in March 2008 as a completely D.I.Y. project but quickly formed into a fully fledged band, the band members are Vincent on guitar and vocals, Thomas on drums and Vyk playing bass guitar. With a name like "Dopethrone", they don't win any points for originally and the music itself is very much in the vein of Bongzilla, Weedeater and Sleep but there is a big difference. Where as Bongzilla battered your brains out with long repetitive riffing, Dopethrone actually keep the songs pretty short and have a almost catchy appeal. Obviously the band are a pack of weed-worshiping maniacs and like Bongzilla, they use a few spoken word samples to drive that point home but its the riffs, the great sound and concise song arrangement that make this such a great release. From the opening title track "Demonsmoke" with the spoken word sample about a woman buying some "Colombian", you pretty much know what you are in for but don't ride them off as just another rip-off stoner band because they have the riffs and more. The riffing has a hazy, old school groove that is more 70's than the likes of the other bands i previously mentioned. There is where the catchy element comes in, yes the sound is fat and heavy but there is a instant hook that comes with every track on here. (doomantia)
