A recent find of mine, discovered after my Lantlôs binge, I've found myself quite attached to this album. "Eerie Sceneries" is not your normal Depressive Black Metal album; there is much more experimentation going on than you think. The album title is perfect; a perfect descriptor of what the record entails. While listening, I actually find myself getting creeped out by the music! Usually, music is just another form of entertainment, but Impavida bring something more to the table. The soundscapes are incredible. I feel like I'm under a moonlit sky residing over an eerily calm lake, waiting, and watching. For what? I have no idea, but listening to "Eerie Sceneries" keeps me from moving, even keeps me from thinking, involving me deep within the very core of this awe-inspiring music.

From the mesmerizing keyboard intro to the graceful, agonized screams and spoken words, and to the soft, yet coarse wall-of-noise that barrages the listener, "Eerie Sceneries" commands total attention.

It's been a while since I've felt so passionately about an album - a Depressive one at that, so I'm certain that this will continue to get plays for many years to come.

This. This is what I would call "intelligent" black metal. I find "The Corpse of Rebirth" to be a meticulously crafted album, and it's quite obvious that the band put a lot of time into tweaking and perfecting these songs. I get an air of, I don't know, sophistication (?) when listening to this record. There's something about it that makes me want to sit down with a cup of tea and some crumpets and just ponder.

All of the songs are very intricate and wonderfully woven together, flowing seamlessly throughout even the longest song, clocked at 16 minutes and 27 seconds. Other instruments are used without hesitation and oftentimes, we hear a flute or violin in the background, supplementing the otherwise black metal. Perhaps that is why it's labeled as Psychedelic Black Metal? Regardless, it's anything but normal, causing you to drift off and get lost in its breathtaking complexity. A truly profound album.

This record collects a series of pieces for piano, percussion and voices written by hungarian composer (nationalized austrian) György Ligeti, american composer Steve Reich and african group Aka Pygmies. Being mostly polyrhythmic compositions for percussion, Ligeti's pieces naturally relate with works made by american composer Steve Reich, and the Aka Pygmies, all of them sharing the same rhythmic complexity of the Pygmies african rhythms. This record gives a different view of how instruments not designed to be used as percussion can be adapted to that purpose with very interesting results.

"I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is destroyed. Alvin Lucier conceived this piece to be recorded by any person narrating any text in any room. Therefore some reinterpretations have been made of this work, including a live, interactive digital version by digital/new media artists Joel Kraut and David Tinapple. Anyways, my intention was not only to bring Lucier's piece to this blog, but also two other records inspired by it, one by americans Tribes of Neurot and the other by argentineans Zann Sessions.

Tribes of Neurot, Neurosis alter ego, took Lucier's idea and used it to remix their record A Sun that Never Sets, but instead of playing it through speakers and recording it with a microphone like Lucier did, they used tapes to play and record, over and over again until the tapes started to deteriorate and the resonant frequencies showed up. Apparently the process took much more than what would if it were done acoustically, and the results can be heard in this record.

This Zann Session was recorded by Gustavo García with an acoustic guitar (the first part) and Carla Bissioli with her voice (the second part). Their performances were recoded and played back into a room again and again until the original sound is almost indistinguishable from the resonace, following Lucier's method. Nevertheless the mix is not necessarily in the order of the rerecording process, one cannot follow it sequentially making the piece a complement between the resonance and the original unmodified sound.

This is some quality black metal. Think Wolves in the Throne Room, except much grittier, more atmospheric, more emotional, more musically impressive, better vocals, and just generally more awesome. This is incredible.

Even if you're not into the Depressive BM genre, it's still worth your time to pick this up. The guitar tone and production is perfect for this release, not too scratchy, but just enough to such you into the music. The songs average about 10 minutes, so prepare yourself for REAL songwriting. It's obvious that these guys either spent a lot of time carefully crafting their music, or are just geniuses. Regardless, they make damn fine music.

As for the vocals, they suit the music amazingly well. Not quite as shrieky as Silencer, but very primal-sounding; think Walknut or Nyktalgia.

Just when you think each song can't get any sadder or more depressing, out of the shadows bursts a beautifully melodic riffs, sending echoes out across the forest you're currently imagining. They do the whole "bring you down into hopelessness, then at the last minute wrench you from the depths into a euphoric bliss. Brilliant.

Very highly recommended if you like Black Metal. Period.
