t is hard to present the new album of Turkish band Seth.ECT named Godspeak without using superlatives. What makes this band so special is really bright usage of industrial, death and black metal with many oriental elements to create the whole which literally blows up your mind. The connection between Seth.ECT and more popular Turkish band Raven Woods is undeniable but it is more than clear that the experience was used in the very best way to create a very complex band and album.
Godspeak is very synthetic and in a way very raw piece which still goes in the furious tempo of death metal. Many bands that choose the industrial path are often accused of not being metal enough but in case of Seth.ECT it’s nowhere close to the truth. The riffs are fast and striking and drums cyclonic yet the melodies create the balance which puts the songs to the level where chaos becomes art and elements which may sound incompatible sublime into a suggestive creation.
There is nothing new or world-shaking about putting contrast into the music, but combining religious and mythological components and purely synthetic lines sounds more than entertaining. The melodic parts as well as the chorals are neatly connected to hard and heavy elements and one would have to be deaf not to notice the classically black or thrash metal moments. It is also hard to ignore occasional Behemoth-ish staves which still don’t make the album less original.
Despite the entirety of the album it takes only few listens to burn out the songs into your mind since every piece has something perfectly entrancing. Sometimes it is the ominous atmosphere like in Orison (the normal version as well as the instrumental one), other times it is an exceptional work with the vocals as in Keops, where the voice creates very original kind of graduation.
But what is common for all of the songs is a shocking energy and sting and the disturbance caused by certain electronic sounds, which not only add spice to the songs, they also keep the mind of a listener prepared for a smash. And the first songs ECT and B.L.A.S.T. with their names as well as sounds only prove it. Mysticism is staying within the songs though, mainly thanks to the key and instrumental passages like in When The Simurgs Collapse or For Se7en Years. On the other hand, there are compositions which contain pure industrial blast like Earth Rise, Hollow Earth or Heart Beat (with Orison my favourite one).
You don’t need to listen to Godspeak many times to completely fall for it. It is slightly difficult to critically describe a work that from the very first tunes shows the exceptional preciseness and preciousness. From battle cry to female chorals, from synth to oriental strains – the contrasts are mixed together but what you get is not a boring gray. It’s a breeze of something new and promising, so lucent in its darkness, so complex in its details. Deep yet blinding – this is what Godspeak is.

"SUPPORT THE BAND WITH BUY ORIGINAL CD"
Italian death metallers, Forgotten Tears, gives an endless amount of brutality with their first fullength, “Words to End”. A Combination of metalcore, death metal and thrash is one of the ways to describe the album but that just scratches the surface. The titletrack dives right in with Faust’s savage vocals and melancholy rhythm that change back and forth to a forceful speed to slow and somber.
The aggression level doesn’t drop until you reach until you hit “Reflection” and “Eye” which is a nice instrumental piece and breaks up the album a little but everything before and after is at full force which I don’t have a problem at all with. “Thoughts Killed My Sleep” is a great atmospheric track with keyboards and special effects happening in the background but doesn’t take away from the ferocity in any way. There are some cleaner and melodic vocals mixed which is a nice change too.
Forgotten tears is not doing anything that hasn’t been done before but they have the skill and talent to pull this kind of metal while still making it interesting for the listener. I highly recommend you make “Words of End” part of your metal collection!
Looks like Timo Tolkki's desperately trying to compensate for all his psycho crap and whinings to his fans. I remember that when he left Stratovarius and released the "opera of his lifetime" called "Saana - Warrior of Life pt.1" (and I still pray that pt. 2 will never see the light of day), I made a bet that he'll never succeed in releasing something more impersonal and stony. Well, he gradually didn't, but man, with each next release it looks like he sure is aiming for it. Despite those several Revolution Renaissance albums had at least some signs of decent playing (which 'surprisingly' turned out to be performed by Timo's producer???), they were nowhere near to being even halfway solid compared to what that guitarist and composer is, or was, capable of.
Surely it's wrong to judge an album by its cover, but in this case it's almost inevitable as it is a pure testimony of the music itself. Really, a copy/pasted color gamma and background from Strato's "Infinity" along with lots of similarities to the "Elements" figures? Same visuals, bad thing is that it doesn't even end there. The instrumental background is awfully close to being a full-time imitation of classic Stratovarius songs or even entire albums of old and before someone shouts that it was namely Tolkki responsible for those records in question, bear in mind that there is no glory in being a copycat of yourself, no matter the terms nor the band, and Symfonia is far from being an exception. And as if that's not enough, the last drop comes with the horrible sound production.
As unsatisfying as it sounds, there are some pleasant catchy moments, mostly in the keyboards of Mikko Harkin and the upbeat drum tempo of Uli Kusch now and then but I'd rather just play Sonata Arctica's albums for all times' sake than waste time listening to fragmentary flashbacks. The vocals are of another disturbing matter - with all due respect to Andre Matos' voice which crowned many Angra albums that I tend to like, he does In Paradisum an ill term. As far as he's well known for his high tenor voice, in this album he strains his vocal chords to the limit, often hitting an unnecessary high-pitched cue which might've been something of value if only it didn't sound as if he's trying to imitate Kotipelto. Can't say I blame it all on him since we all know who's behind the compositional and recording process and who still suffers from his post-Strato syndrome.
Personally, I always dig long tracks with tempo changes, choirs, neoclassical touch in guitars and keyboards and truly appreciate what Tolkki's project tried to do with the homonymous "In Paradisum" song for it's one of the few standout moments, but we've all heard numerous better examples before - just shake the dust off those Stratovarius classics or spin a random Rhapsody of Fire opus. To get back on track, among songs which might even be called decent by some die-hards we have "Come by the Hills" and "Santiago" which are fastened Sonata Arctica wannabees, a dangerously familiar ballad "Alayna" heard lots of times before… and heck, a crapload of fillers. In other words, nothing representative and definitely not worthy enough to save this record from being ditched.
It's always sad to witness the full disgrace of favorite musicians, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm done with Tolkki's projects, solo stuff, all-star bands and whatnot. If you're a fan of old-school Stratovarius or Andre Matos solo albums, you'll probably enjoy a track or two, otherwise just keep off and spare yourself the trouble of seeing how one of your anticipated albums turns into a shameful disappointment.

However, with 2011 seeing the announcement of Heavenly Ecstasy, the interest in the band was reignited. The first thing that struck me was that unlike previous releases, the band has chosen to give up the blue hues that are utilised on all their other artworks, and has chosen for a fiery orange artwork, potentially marking a shift in musical direction of the band. Fortunately, as the music eventually goes to prove, this could very well be a return to form for one of the best progressive metal bands in existence right now.
Similar to previous albums, Heavenly Ecstasy opens with an ambient/futuristic sounding introduction on Contact, with instruments slowly fading into the song, building up the climax and setting the atmosphere for the songs that are to come in the next tracks on the album. The introductory keyboards on Eyes of Fire continue the futuristic feel of the music, before the guitars come into the music and then the powerful vocals of Nils. While the power of the vocals of Nils are not fully displayed initially, as the album progresses his vocal range and skills are slowly tested, proving to the listener that he is still on form, such as on Into the Aftermath.
Necrophagia's biography is almost as horrific as its music. You could say a long-running death metal band that influenced many groups yet never received the acclaim they deserved and Phil Anselmo’s place in Necrophagia's discography are both terrifying endeavors, but Killjoy still carries his zombie army to the moonlight night after night, never complaining. "Deathtrip 69" takes place six years after "Harvest Ritual Volume 1," basically continuing the band's simplistic, driving death metal curse Killjoy zapped to life back in 1983. It was delayed a lot, sure, and it took a long time to finally emerge from the crypt, but Necrophagia fans, fear not: your undead warlords are still capable of making you happy.
Except for the polished production, not a whole lot has changed in the Necrophagia camp, musically, at least. Necrophagia's journey is essentially a mirror of their discography, with simple, crawling riffs hacking like knifes while Killjoy does that raspy shriek-thingy he does. The band's strive usually looks pretty fun, and I'll be the first to tell you that "Deathtrip 69" becomes more appealing with every listen. The riffs, melodies, structural themes and other core parts of Necrophagia's necromancy are fashionable for every member of the death metal family, especially the ones with a violence fetish.
Killjoy lyrically brings the horror tales to the voice of "Deathtrip 69," with tales of terror and blood about Satan and Charles Manson, oh my! Yes, lyrics aren't important usually, but it's good to see Necrophagia still keeps their verbosity alive and well; over twenty years on and still telling tales about ghouls and graveyards. I like the unusual tints they add to some of the tracks as well, like the melancholic lead that closes "Bleeding Eyes of the Eternally Damned," which is really unexpected and totally superb. "A Funeral for Solange" is a strange, acoustic-based tripper which halts the storm of gore and instead creates a creepy, sorrowful perception. Weird, but very cool.
So "Deathtrip 69" holds its own as a Necrophagia album from its gruesome beginning to the hilarious outro. There are a few questionable moments here and there, but I have nothing to bitch about overall, honestly. I mean, the head-throbbing heart of curses that pumps the addicting, beating drive in Necrophagia's torturous galley never fails to keep the record fresh and bursting with death metal goodness. It isn't the best thing ever, yet "Deathtrip 69" still gets a solid thumbs-up, and there's no doubt in my mind that Charles Manson approves as well.

Slipknot’s first live concert since passing of bassist Paul Gray (May 24) took place yesterday (June 17) during the famous Sonicsphere festival at Terravibe Park, Athens. The show counted with 25,000 fans.
Gray’s Red jumpsuit, Mask and bass guitar were placed symbolically in the back of the Apollo Stage alongside the band members, who were wearing matching Red jumpsuits and old style masks to represent the band’s classic image.
Doonie Steele, a former Slipknot guitarist from the band’s early days, played bass during the show while remaining hidden from the audience’s view.
To mark the significance of the occasion, frontman Taylor took a moment to state the following to the public: "It's been a long time. Hello Athens, how are you? As you know, tonight is very emotional show for us but it is not, NOT, a Negative day. It is a positive day. A day for celebration. This is our first show — with you. Profound Lore Records. The follow-up to 2009's "The Great Cessation" is
described in a press release as "dirtier and sludgier than ever before." The CD
features guest appearances by NEUROSIS' Scott Kelly on the tracks "Before We
Dreamed Of Two Mastered" and "Adrift In The Ocean".

"Frozen Moments Between Life and Death" sticks to a predictable modern mix of thrash and death metal which is both fast and slow topped up by really good leads. This is straight-forward music without any technical "temptations" which can be "bitterly" aggressive ("The Bitter Seed") at times, but the more sprawling atmospheric composition (the good progressive semi-ballad "Nosce te Ipsum"; the industrialized doomster "Hazardous Magic") is just around the corner, the latter occupying the end which comes in the form of the mild spacey instrumental "To Bury An Empire" with dreamy airy riffs.
